Last month, this particular “Old Monkey” turned a year older. I am now 45. It’s a strange feeling to suddenly be the age your mum was when you actually thought she was quite middle-aged, and yet not really feel any different.
I imagine you may be wondering what the reference to “old monkeys” has to do with the price of fish. Well, for half of my life until this point, I was a secondary school language teacher. My fascination with languages stemming from wonderful camping holidays in France, Germany and beyond as a child. I will never grow tired of discovering the origin of a word, or the quirks that make a language fit so beautifully within its culture. Or is it the other way round? How else would I end up intrigued by the fact that in France a duck says “coin coin!” and a dog says “ouaf!” ?
Back to the monkey! Our particular idiom “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”, translates (roughly) in French to be ” Ce n’est pas à un vieux singe qu’on apprend à faire des grimaces ” – You can’t teach an old monkey to pull faces!
Or can you? I have recently made some significant changes to my life. The most recent was to set about learning web design, blogging, SEO and in turn create McGrath Web Design and formally launch my design business.
Why web design?
A love of languages led to a languages degree and then to teaching, which I did for 20 years exactly. Changes to the education system meant that I felt I spent less time teaching and more time analysing data and chasing targets and all the freedom and creativity of my lessons went by the wayside. So I left. To coin a Noel Gallagher lyric, “Some might say” that was a rash move. I was part time, had two children aged 3 and 7 and a steady income, with holidays. Anyone who knows anything about teaching knows it was never as simple as that. So I threw caution to the wind and headed out for ” my brighter day”.
For the last couple of years, I have been running my own business, teaching my own language classes and this has led to a newly discovered love of web design and blogging! As someone who previously shrugged off all encouragements by friends to join Facebook, Instagram , Twitter, Pinterest or LinkedIn it is slightly amusing that I am now social media savvy and relish the challenge of using it to grow my business. Who knew? The creative juices are flowing again!
Whether it is a mid-life revelation ( crisis is so negative) , or whatever, I am fully embracing the opportunity to make a living doing what I love.
McGrath Web Design
McGrath Web Design is only a fledgling at the moment, but I am hopeful of a safe and successful launch.
